We are all Volunteers at the WSBN.
New members are welcome & no prior experience is required.
We have two regular teams & they have a genuine appreciation for the benefits of indigenous plants.
One team collect local seed & cuttings from in & around the Bass Coast Shire & the second team propagate in our nursery at the State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi. WSBN Volunteers are included within our yearly insurance policy.
Mentors guide our teams & teach the protocols for seed collection, seed germination, plant propagation, nursery hygiene, etc.
- Seed Collection Team – Monday 9am – 11am (Locations differ each week)
- Nursery Team – Wednesday 10am – 12 noon
The nursery team hibernates over some winter months.
Seed Collection Team
The Seed Collection Team are our intrepid explorers, seeking out nooks, swamplands, sandy rises & bush tracks to find indigenous seeds from the local area.
These ‘jaunts’ are usually on a Monday & strong friendships are formed within the team ably led by our specialist mentors.
If you enjoy being outdoors in the bush & are interested in learning about how to identify our indigenous plants, then this is a great activity for you.
The Nursery Team meet at our shed & nursery on site at the State Coal Mine.
Activities include cleaning of the seed, batching the seed into storage quantities, preparing seed orders, seed germination, propagation of cuttings, pricking out & tubing plants, weeding, watering & nursery maintenance.
New volunteers are given an opportunity to observe initially to gain an overall understanding of the activities. Mentors assist new volunteers with an activity until they are comfortable.
Each volunteer’s time commitment will vary & you may decide a preference for one team role to the other or you may enjoy participation in both.
Your contribution will make a difference!
